Discover new triathlon race destination for westernmost point in Europe!
Portas do Mar, Ponta Delgada city, São Miguel island, Azores Islands
When? November, 5, 2017
Legend says that these nine lonely islands, approximately 800 miles off the coast of Portugal, are leftovers from Atlantis. In reality, the archipelago was born out of ''Ocean Lava" activity and first settled by Europeans starting in the 1400s. The Azores have flown under the radar for travelers, but the "Hawaii of the Atlantic" makes a gorgeous new triathlon tourism destination - rich in gastronomy, spa-cation offerings and stellar Ocean Lava scenery.
Now rebranded, as Ocean Lava Azores, a triathlon event in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores in the mid-Atlantic got under way this year on 5 November 2017. Based in Portas do Mar complex of the Ponta Delgada city, the event was previously known as the Triathlon Azores Airlines - Triatlo Longo de Ponta Delgada.
The Ocean Lava Azores Islands is a joint organization of the Ocean Lava Planet triathlon series, Portas do Mar Association, Triathlon Federation of Portugal and Clube Açoriano de Todo o Terreno, with the support of the Azores Airlines, Municipality of Ponta Delgada and the Government of Azores. The organization committee is completed with representatives of Azores Islands destination and other experienced local partners.
